Do I need a data plan with Verizon if I only text and call?

The phone is LG Fathom™, but I have no intention of using the internet. Purely text and calls only. I remember reading somewhere that all phones need a data plan, but they make it seem like it's only for internet. My phone arrives on Wednesday, and I would like to know before I text it up.
